I believe if I'm remembering correctly it's only on the Tula made rifles, other manufacturers used either No or or some nothing at all. You can buy an original for $100 with most if not all serial numbers matching. It's a military rifle and so many were reworked at armories. Butt plates generally didn't even have serial numbers to match a receiver.
